Brain MRI evolution of metronidazole intoxication.

چکیده
A 64-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of intermittent episodes of ataxia and dysarthria. She had been on metronidazole 1,500 mg daily for ulcerative colitis for 10 months. Cranial MRI 3 months before admission revealed hyperintensity in corpus callosum and bilateral dentate nuclei (figure 1, A–C). MRI on admission revealed cystic necrotic degeneration (figure 1, D and E) and cytotoxic edema (figure 2) in corpus Figure 1 Consecutive MRI in a patient with metronidazole intoxication

MRI of Metronidazole-Induced Encephalopathy
We report the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of metronidazole-induced encephalopathy in a 58-year-old man who was treated with metronidazole for hepatic encephalopathy. MRI is likely to be helpful in confirming the diagnosis of metronidazole toxicity in clinically suspected cases.
متن کاملMetronidazole-induced Encephalopathy: Case Report and Review Literature.
PURPOSE Neurotoxicities resulting from various medications are under diagnosed; Metronidazole-induced encephalopathy is one of them. Here we present two patients with a history of metronidazole use and discuss neuroimaging findings. CASE REPORT We report two patients suffering from acute neurological symptoms associated with metronidazole use. A 70-year-old female who received a cumulative do...
متن کاملAtypical Metronidazole-Induced Encephalopathy in Anaerobic Brain Abscess
Metronidazole-induced encephalopathy is a very rare complication of the long standing use of metronidazole. The encephalopathy is bilateral and symmetric in nature. We report on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and clinical course of metronidazole-induced encephalopathy in a 60-year-old female with a persistent anaerobic brain abscess after draining of the abscess. After 3 months of metroni...
متن کاملHuge Brain Cystic Lesions Resulting from Metronidazole-Induced Encephalopathy
Metronidazole-induced encephalopathy (MIE) is a rare clinical condition resulting from long-term use of metronidazole. The symptoms and brain MRI changes in MIE usually resolve dramatically on discontinuation of treatment, and thus MIE with brain cystic lesions has rarely been reported. A 49-year-old woman was treated for a lumbar abscess with oral administration of 1.5 g/day of metronidazole f...
متن کاملMetronidazole-induced encephalopathy in a patient with Crohn's disease
Metronidazole is a widely used antibiotic for the treatment of anaerobic bacterial infections. Metronidazole-induced encephalopathy (MIEP) is a rare but potentially reversible disease. The mechanism of MIEP remains unclear, and differences in the neurotoxic effects of oral versus intravenous (IV) metronidazole administration have not yet been determined. We report the case of a Crohn's disease ...
